If you DON'T use the arena trick you might find it harder. I like your style counter their better stats with yours.
As previously mentioned enemies have different equipment, higher stats and theres more of them. The best example of different equipment is Kenneth who has Purge (as well as Aura).
Hectors starting level was very tough (you have to make very careful movements).
At the moment i'm on the first map that you use Nnian and I had to send Level 20 Hector in with the Emblem axe as he magnitute of Knights and Wyverns were an ammount to make trachia proud. I'm trying not to use Hector for the reason above.
The worst one was the map against Uhai. Why? Because the RNG gave him criticals with his kill sword! Twice!
