I agree, its not like he was gonna planning to kill him.
At the fight in Tamahome's village i thought Tamahome had a reason to kill him as he was very angry at the time, understandable since he killed his family.
But in their last fight Tamahome did it to protect miaka so he wasn't exacty trying to kill him deliberatly, also if i remember correctly it was Suboshi's own meteor balls that got him killed not tamhome (although i may be wrong...i cant quite remember that part)
Nakago was pretty ruthless but i guess the stuff in his past really affected him for him to do the things he did. after seeing his past i felt kinda sorry for him.
