I have gotten the chance to play ROTK XI lately, and I have to say... what happened? Why do I HAVE to be a ruler, and not a ronin, or a vassel? Why can't I control my own tactics? Why is this game so freaking easy?! I must say that if I was a brand new player, this would be a good game to break in on, but really, how many people are going to jump on this bandwagon now? Do they have to dumb it down to the point where any moron can conquer China with relative ease?
I'm concerned at the direction of this great series. I understand trying to make it accesable to the Dynasty Warriors crowd, but some things here are really bothering a vet like myself (oh, wow, my DW4 data is letting me use Da Qiao. Whoopie). Am I the only person here that feels that way, or am I just nitpicking?

I haven't played IX...haven't even played VIII yet, I'm still just toying around with VII. But not being able to play as someone else sucks. I never play as rulers.

If you're still playing around with VII, then don't even bother wasting your money on XI until the price comes down at least ($50 is steep for that game), and forget VIII even exists. VII is the best game in the series, IMO. VIII drags on.... and on... and on... battles take too long, there's really no strategy to them, and I hate the vassel/lord system. I haven't gone too deep into XI yet, but it seems like "ROTK for Dummies".

[glow=green,2,300]I haven't really played any ROTK games but I know what you're talking about. People complain about how a game is too hard to get into when it's just that the person playing the game sucks as a player> Trust me, Koei is probably doing it for the reason you stated....to get Dynasty Warrior/Samurai Warrior fanboys interested in other games...well, mostly Dynasty Warrior fanboys anyways. Don't worry, you'll be seeing people named "SunCe99" and "LordLuBu2005" more than ever....-__-' And they'll be saying things like "ROTK IX is the best evar! You get to play as [Insert General Here]! S/he's the best character in the game!" It sucks but you have to deal with things like that. Remember, you want the series to survive and it can only do so by Koei syphoning the money of fanboys into the company and giving you more games...that's like [/glow]

Personally, I like ROTK 4 and 6 the best out of the entire series. I dislike 5, and 9 pissed me off. Not because of the play as ruler thing.... from ROTK 1 to 6, (I've never played 7, and I don't like 8 much) you can only play as ruler. So it is rather a traditional thing.
Even the Japanese Nobunaga series, for most parts of the series you can only play as the ruler. Being a ruler is just...well, tedious, and kind of controlling... but no one really complained about that until KOEI allows the player to play as general, though.
But I played them in Chinese, so they might not be entirely the same, and it's for PC.
Back on topic, XI pissed me off because of the graphics. They character faces pissed me off... also, the Chinese voices are soooo disturbing... To a point that I've never finished that game.
