I look at his stat gains, and they look similar to Leif. I never used him before, I do know he criticals alot. What so good about him compared to other mercenaries and swordmasters?

Wrath, Pugi Axe, high speed axe user and High base stats can use swords after class change.
Nuff said.

Because he kicks butt. Actually if you compare his stats gain to Leaf, Leaf is stronger than Othin. Luckily for Othin, his starting stats are very good, plus his own personal axe is one of the best in the game. Trust me, neither Leaf or Othin are useless. Properly leveled, both can do massive damage.

Leif, only with scrolls...
Othin? His growth goes mental after a few levels.

Othin only lacks Magic, that's all. In my games though,he always manages to max out STR,SPD,SKL,and sometimes even DEF before class change.
Oh yeah, the Pugi Axe combined with insane Skill growth plus Wrath really puts the hurting on enemies. Not to mention that its attack range is 1-2 spaces, making it the best axe in the game.

It's not really hard to max Leaf without scrolls. But then again I use scroll on everyone anyway so it doesn't matter.

I decided to use Leif without scrolls for once and now he's a level 1 prince with 13 as his highest stat only and thats for speed and luck. Everything else hasn't even reached 8 yet. Which is quite pathetic...

which is patheic since just using the first two srolls and 19 levels adn str tends to max out

Hey. I agree with everyone else about his butt kicking ability, but he is a tad bit on the slow side...well, compared to Carrion anyway (I wonder why). Really though, to find out exactly what is so great about him, combine a level 20 Mercenary Othin (Puche Axe equipped) with a priest using a Warp Staff. Teleport him into a stinking army...the result, majority of the time, is half the enemies in the level dead and Othin is barely scratched. Truly amazing...

Well,he could probably even do that even when not promoted...only a few characters can do it without promotion, like Malitia.

That's strange, I've always had Othin with more speed than any stat. Halvan always ends up more powerful before class change with more balanced stats. But in the end, they both end up pretty much the same.

But in the end, they both end up pretty much the same. Hey. I meant movement speed, since his speed hits 20 easily. Halvan was my trouble character, so I left him and went with the extremely powerful Salem (I would have done this regardless, but it's sounds like a good excuse to me). ;D
