I just use save state on ZSNES.

At the start of your turn, before you move any characters, you can save by going into the menu and selecting 'Seebu', the second last option - there will be a dash in the middle of it. The only other three-kana option with a dash is 'Deeta' (Data) near the top, so it should be pretty easy to isolate.
You also automatically get given the option to save between chapters.

Snes9x v.1.39 also has a save state.

Once you beat a chapter, the game also allow you to save.

yeah but i prefer Snes9x. It looks better and works with the very few game ( like 3) gams that i play on it. ;D
