Hmm...well, you do have a point, Summerwolf, as I recall, Ares and Athena, in Greek Mythology, were often at odds with one another, and Athena often managed to come out on top due to her cunning and strategies. However, in terms of philosophies, I think their basic ethos can be somewhat succintly described like this:
Athena is the goddess of strategy, and Ares is the god of actual fighting.
Thus, while you would certainly want Athena as the commander of an army, you would want Ares to be a soldier in that army, because while he may not excel at strategy and tactics, he is unmatched in the art of combat itself. Really, I can't say that either two gods are much better suited to combat over one another...Sure, Athena's a better strategist, but even the best strategy becomes useless if the army lacks the firepower to carry it out. And Ares may be a great warrior, but even the strongest warrior will lose if his general doesn't utilize him well.
In terms of personality, Ares the god and Aless might be pretty far apart, however, while the god might be stupid, I believe the combat style of Eltoshan's son would be fitting for a god of war. The thing is, Ares isn't a strategist or a tactician--that's the player's job. Ares is supposed to carry those orders out--he's a knight, a warrior. He may not be "stupid" but I do think he would fight with savagery, if for no other reason than the fact his Holy Weapon seems suited for a war god. It grants Ares more magic defense, which would be invaluble to a warrior vulnerable to mages and their ilk. Also, unlike other Holy Weapons, such as the Ichival, which returns life to its user, or the Tyrfing, which grants its user the Prayer ability, the Mistortin seems like the kind of weapon well suited to a strong berzerker--it gives the "berzerk" or "critical hit" skill, which allows it to do double damage on occaison.
But in any case, if you're really adamant about not using "ares" how about...Areth? I think the kana for "su" is sometimes translated as "th" such as in the case of Marth, whose kana, I believe, read "Ma-vowel extension line-su." And Areth seems to be pretty fitting for Eltoshan's son...like you said, he doesn't fight for war's sake, but for something he believes in, as a true knight would, and I think "Areth" has a kind of valorous quality to it, it's the kind of name you'd expect for a brave champion or hero...of course, that's just my opinion, please excuse my insolence ^^;;
