I hope there isn't already a post on this. But what exactly are the skills and what do they do? My patch doesn;t have the skills translated, (I don't know if this is unusual) so I don't know them.
Thanks in advance.

They're special abilities.
There are 3 types of skills:
Kojin skill/Personal skill (can be inherited by children);
Heisha skill/Class skill (class-dependant; every swordfighter has Tsuigeki, every Sage has Renzoku...);
Weapon skill (not shown among the character skills. Example, Tirfing grants Inori to its wielder).
They are:
Ootate/Big Shield (Shield): lvl% of chance of blocking attacks. Example: Generals and Barons have it.
Ikari/Anger (Thunder): if HP < half, all hits are criticals (2x attack power). Example: Tiltyu.
Tsuigeki/Pursuit (arrows on blue bg): high chance of attacking twice. The second attack is after the opponent's counterattack. Example: almost everyone you get. =P
Renzoku/Continue (arrow on white): chance of multiple consecutive attacks. Activates more rarely than Tsuigeki. Example: Cuan.
Nusumu/Steal (gold sack): steals opponents' gold when hitting them. Example: all thieves (class skill).
Odoru/Dance (person with a flag): All characters around the dancer can move again. Dancer class skill. Example: Sylvia.
Charisma (shining person in blue case): allies in a short radius (2 squares?) gain +10 to hit/dogde. Example: Lachesis.
Mikiri/Awareness (eye): immunity to critical-like skills (hissatsu, ikari, sword skills). Example: Ayra.
Inori/Prayer (star): activates if HP is very low. For that turn, the character's evade will rise to ridiculous levels, and even 100% hit attacks may miss him. Example: Finn.
Hissatsu/Berserk (crossed spears on orange): allows character to score critical hits (doubles attack power). Example: Noish. Weapons with 50 kills get this ability.
Machibuse/Ambush (arrow pointing to point): if HP < half, character will attack first on a counterattack. Example: Lex.
Totsugeki/Duel (red vs blue arrow on yellow): activation is HP-based. If activated, starts another round of combat. Example: Midayle.
Ryuuseiken/Meteor Sword (cross on green): If activated, deals a 5-hit-Renzoku. Pure awesomeness. Example: Ayra. Can only be used by foot swordmen (swordfighters, thieves and the like).
Gekkouken/Moonlight Sword (cross on blue): If activated, ignores opponent's defense. Example: Hollin. Can only be used by foot swordmen.
Taiyouken/Sunlight Sword (cross on yellow): If activated, character recovers the ammount of hp he dealt of damage. Example: Deu. Can only be used by foot swordmen.
Live (brillance on green): item- and enemy-only. Recovers a small ammount of HP each turn.
EDIT: As AceNoctali pointed, I forgot two. For better reference, I'll steal his descriptions. Whee.
Negiri/Bargain (yellow with a %): Grants the owner of this skill a 50% discount of the price of the weapons and items he buys or repairs. Example : Deu.
Elite (blue case with inside a person surrounded by stars who's waving at you): Each time the owner of this skill gains EXP, the ammount of EXP he gains is doubled. Example : Lex.

Allow me to add some corrections and some skills you forgot, The End : Inori/Prayer (star): activates if HP is very low. For that turn, the character's evade will rise to ridiculous levels, and even 100% hit attacks may hit him. Example: Finn. Do you wanted to say "and even 100% hit attacks may not hit him" , perhaps ? Hissatsu/Berserk (crossed spears on orange): allows character to score critical hits (doubles attack power). Example: Deu. Weapons with 50 kills get this ability. 1) Deu doesn't have Berserk. Noish and Levin, fr example, have it though. 2) Agree for the 50 kills, but you forgot to add after "and more". Other thing, the more kills you have on the weapon after reaching 50 kills, the more often the weapon's Berserk will activate. I'll add two skills you forgot : Bargain : (Orange case with a "50%" written in it) Grants the owner of this skill a 50% discount of the price of the weapons and items he buys or repairs. Example : Deu. Elite : (blue case with inside a person surrounded by stars who's waving at you) Each time the owner of this skill gains EXP, the ammount of EXP he gains is doubled. Example : Lex.

Of course. But I did it in a hurry, so I didn't notice.
Right. Did I put Deu? I though Noish. Damn rush.
Well, I can say what I'm not sure of. =P
Hurry. I forgot there were some after taiyouken.
Bargain's symbol is a percent with an arrow...
EDIT: Edited my first post. 'Hope you don't mind the description stealing.

There's still one skill that you left out. It's Regenerate. This skill allows you to recover some HP at the beginning of each turn. Only the 12 Demon Generals in the final chapter comes with this skill. You can only get this skill through special weapons and rings so it doesn't show up in your skills section.

It's listed as Live.

I think il'l go through the dummy skills. You never see the icons for these skills but almost all of them are still used in the game. Not only does that image show all the regular skills it shows all the dummy ones as well. All the dummy ones are in the 3x3 section on the left. Top-left (Next to Awareness): Grid. Unused. I'm not sure what this skill did, I think it allowed units the walk through impassable terrain and stuff. NB: A working version can be found by hacking in Fe5 and yes it does allow you to walk through impassable things. Middle-Middle (Right of Sun hit): Dark hit. Attack power is sliced in half. The skill version of this activates in a similar way to the sword hits. An alterd version of this skill in found in the Loptuosu spell. IS scrapped this version as it was stupid (what do you mean only half the time?) Middle-right (Right of previous): Light Hit. Negates Dark Hits affects. Alterd version is seen in the Naga spell. Bottom-Left: Return. Adds the return command. Using this command warps user back to main castle. This skill is seen in the return ring. It is always invisible. Bottom-Middle: Love. Ths is seen elsewhere now. Skill is invisible and probably duff. IS probably scrapped this as chacters could only hold 6 Skills (without bugs). Bottom-Right: Knight. Behave like a mounted unit. Move again (if there are remaining movement) and rearm after battle. The knights ring grants this effect. It is always invisible (?untested) IS probably scrapped the icon for stating the obvious/confusion (why do pegasus knights have it?)

Interesting, Starwolf. IS probably scrapped the icon for stating the obvious/confusion (why do pegasus knights have it?) Well, probably because they can also move after acting.

Urgh, my head hurts a bit, but it makes sense. I got it. This helps me a bit, since I really don't know much about 4/5.
Like a battle in Fe5, that when on for more than attacker, counter, double attack, plus some others that blew my mind.
The FE4/5 battle system does has it's ups from Fe6/7...

Sure it has (however, my opinion is quite biased, so meh).
If you ever play FE5, I warn you: some skills work differently, there.
Ootate: No more a class skill for Generals.
Ikari: Gives an insane boost to CRT when counterattacking.
Tsuigeki/Berserk: don't exist. The double-attack and critical system is similar to FE3/6/7's one.
Nusumu: you can steal items. Any item that has less weight than your build, in fact. The victim must have lower speed.
Odoru: affects only one character, like in FE3/6/7.
Mikiri: negates the activation of any enemy skill. However, unlike in FE4, gives no protection against normal criticals and weapons like armor killer.
Inori: can activate during a round. More powerful.
Machibuse: always attacks first.
Totsugeki: can activate when you're attack without being able to retaliate. Thus, may be dangerous.
The others remain the same.

Nice, Starwolf. I never noticed them before.
I assume that they're the reasons for the holes in the bitwise skills, then? That makes a bit more sense, then...
[edit] Yeah, they match up perfectly with the holes, if you include the class skills as well.
Regarding Pursuit and Continue... I believe that one of them activates depending on speed, and the other one activates depending on weapon weight. I'm not sure on them, though.

um... in fe5 the enemy uses the 5 hit thing, and in some of those hits its the skill that negates armor.
