If I lose Dorcas in the tutorial mission that I found him in, is he gone forever, or does he come back later? Just wondering, because he said something about coming back later.

He comes back in chapter 11. Not sure what items he would have though.

Items always reset after the tutorial, so there's no point in setting up your characters at the end of chapter 10.

Every guys you have lost during the tutorial will come after...... But Phlogistic is right, those guy can't gain experience during this no-fighting time.

People who died in tutorial come back, but they will lose all the experience they gained and start at really low level.
Dorcas will come back in Chapter 11 with Steel Axe and an Energy Ring

I would guess he does, I never actually let anyone die in he tutorial. If you get lucky he can become a pretty good Warrior with high HP, Str, Ski, and Spd. At least my Dorcas grew pretty well in my restarted game.

If you let them get defeated in the tutorial, they come back in chapter 11 but with lower levels.
