I heard that there weren't throwing knives for balance. You know there is an axe and a spear that can be thrown but not a knife. I kinda realized the balance system and had a question.
Swords: none exist that can be thrown but there are some swords infused with spells.
Axes: To my knowledge there arn't any high critical axes (actually this is more about accuracy then critical you see axes always seem to be heavy there arn't as far as I can see any low weight axes) other then kill axes. Although there not high there are slim swords and spears which have some critical that does make a big difference with the right people especially if your on a budget (hectors Wolf bail doesn't count as it is a special weapon only available to him atleast until a future FE game).
Now what do spears have wrong with them? There are high critical ones and high attack ones (silver spear), there are even very accurate ones (slim lance) but I am not sure about what balances spears other then there not good weapons to use against axes which is what bandits use which are what you start out fighting in from what I have seen ever FE game.
Can someone help me out here?

Axes- On a battlefield they are incredibly unpratical, sure they're powerful but you have to be strong to use a good one very well plus by the time you've pulled your axe out of one dead guy you get sliced down by another. But throwing on the other hand, Light Axe's makes for incredibly good throwing weapons due to their power and also good shape.
Spears- Well if your mounted you are expected to use a spear, its far easier to ride up and poke somebodies eyes out with a spear then to bend over to slice them down. Also if you think about it spears have a range advantage over sword, they're far longer and stronger. Generally spears were the choice weapon on the battlefield.
Sword- They're all-round and easy to carry and use, but could you imagine the danger of a throwing knife? You'd cut your hand off trying to us one. But swords were generally better as finishers or backup weapons you'd start with a spear and take out as many as you can with minimal damage then finish off the leftovers with a sword

I think swords are the least disavantaged of the three, because a sword vs spear is not so dramatic for the sword user if you had a good one........... sometimes

Swords really do have it best as I said, they least disadvantage because they are adaptable and light, spear are battlefield weapons sword could be used near anywhere.
And Axes are plain silly for the most part...they were incredibly primitive and cheap weapons.
