And remember a thing, Nils says that when he and Ninan were near to the Dragon Gate, they heard a "familiar" voice....... And that was Nergal. 
That what I said in my previous post.....
It's because of trying to gain power through dark magic that he eventually lost his memory, and forgot to return to his kids. Nergal vaguely remembered something though ('I left something important here...') but he's obviously so deep into the dark arts that he'll never remember, plus it was so long ago. Ninian and Nils were probably just too young to remember. Look at how old they are. =P
