So I picked up the game this weekend... and I can't stop putting it down. I've been up till 3 AM on both Saturday and Sunday... it's that addictive of a game.
So I was right... partially... about the whole kiddy storyline thing. But from where I'm at right now, this thing is actually pretty damn deep.
*Semi spoiler*
From Marche's standpoint (perhaps the most static character in terms of personality), he just wants to go back home. And to do that, he needs to destroy the crystals- simple enough.
But then you have Ritz. Finding the harsh world of Ivalice more a game than anything else, the last thing she wants to do is go back to her boring old life. Finding her bold, brash attitude a plus in this world, she wants to continue to play the game, no matter what.
And then you have Mewt. Perhaps the deepest chara in the entire game, he's in the right role at the right time- the whiny little kid that wants revenge on those that picked on him back in the real world- and his mother and father are the queen and judgemaster of Ivalice. And can you blame him for being a tad controlling?
And with the world of Ivalice being ripped from the fabric of time and space with every crystal destroyed, can you truly blame Remedi- or even Cid, for that matter- for the increase of those tyrannical laws? For a child that doesn't want to return to a world of oppression? The storyline... simply beautiful.
*End semi spoiler*
Graphics are good, aside for a little slowdown in some areas with rain effects and numerous sprites on the screen. Music is of Final Fantasy quality, albeit a tad repetitive (no more than FE is); the groans and moans of your people dying are laughable. And the menus... damn, those things are IMPOSSIBLE to get around. It's almost like Square Enix included too damn much and wanted to keep EVERYTHING so they made a super-confusing menu system to give you tons of control that you don't necessarily want. It took me five hours in to find out that you need to hit start when selecting a weapon for a unit to see it's boosted stats. And it still takes me a good ten minutes after every three bouts or so to see if I need to get anyone any new weapons to learn more skills- keeping in mind that learning easier skills usually lie within a weaker weapon to wield.
But it's still got me hooked like you wouldn't believe. It's a beautiful game, it really is; this game will keep me quite entertained until FE comes (only two weeks, guys, only two weeks!!). A recommended purchase. Definitely.
