I don't even rate Chrono that highly but someone has to fight for the Square fanz... Chrono trigger was good because it was VERY LINEAR (to the degree that is takes every EXACTLY the same ammount of time to beat). This means that even the most ameteur of players can feel they have achieved something buy taking the same ammount of time as a pro. Its graphics are easy on the eye and show varviety (this is a change from the gloomy coloured RPGs with many areas and things having similar graphics). Its design doesn't require you to battle more the game throws at you! Now, can someone who gives a darn take over!
I liked Chrono trigger as I played a Japanese Sample game a while back and wondered what the rest of the game was like (as well as what was happening)... I always see a game through to the end no matter how dull. Usually I was take a break of serveral months part-way through a game. Chrono was the first game I didn't do this in. You might be able to infer this as a good thing.
As for it being good. Define this good. World Peace? Good is just an opinion so whatever I throw in your face you can always dismis it. Nobody can say whats good about it as no fundemental flaws spring to mind. Whatever us normal people found good about it you will never be able to find.
That wasn't meant to come out harsh but you can help us by telling us what isn't good in Chrono Trigger. Your standard of good is different, my standard of good is different and so is the guys next door.
As for FFVI I like non-linear games but not FFVI did it. If the first half wasn't so story based it wouldn't be too bad. Also there are lots of wasted oppitunities. I was hoping the second half would start wiith whose quest I wanted to follow... Its too non-linear in that I have ABSOLUTLEY NO IDEA WHAT THE HELL I'M SUPPOSED TO DO! My View of Non-linear is: Get to this point across the montains but with alternative ways to get across the mountains. Go round them in a boat, fly across them in an airship of try the abandoned mine... or just come back and cross the mountain later after that aztec temple is sure to have a dragon in it...

Mainly because I've always heard people saying "Chrono Trigger is the best RPG ever," and I would usually think "Wait, wtf why?" I don't think the game sucks or anything, just overrated by most people. The game is just average to me.

I don't think the game sucks or anything, just overrated by most people. The game is just average to me. I'm with you on this. I thought the battles were repetitive and slow, and it gets annoying. Even though you can avoid some enemies, there are certain ones that are unavoidable. For example, the imp ace on Truce Canyon near the gate can't be avoided every time you cross the bridge. Well for me at least. Like Starwolf said, it's very linear, and you can't do much other than playing by the plot. The game does have brilliant music, though. And the variations of the endings are interesting. That was the only reason why I started a New Game +. I ended up collecting all of the endings.. call me a loser now. On the other hand, I do love Chrono Chross.

Well, there are a number of side quests to do before jumping right into Lavos, so it is a non-linear part in that game.
Just like in FF6, there are a lot of side quests which can be skipped, some characters don't have to be in the party etc. But the unique character designs are what captured me. Setzer... Setzer... Setzer.

I like all RPG's ... just because of the genre. Leveling up, cool moves, weaponry, It all fits together perfectly.

The reason I like Chrono Trigger is because when i first played it, I thought it sucked but then I started to play it for hours on end, sure some of the battles can be boring or easy in some way or another, but like Starwolf said "As for it being good.
Your standard of good is different, my standard of good is different and so is the guys next door.", that is exactly what I think, we all have different interests and standards about the games we play. I just think beating on games isn't right, if you don't like a game, just say it, you don't have to mock or criticise it. Sure I have a different out look on games as the next person, but that doesn't mean I don't like some of the games he or she likes.

I liked that the battles were not random and the different endings. Chrono Cross was a better game.
What the f**k is the problem with it being too linear.Thats the part where you're supposed to use your brain to figure out what you're supposed to do. You get to choose what you want to do instead of being led like a mule running toward a carrot on a string. I like games that let me do things in order as I please. I love many linear games too but I have no problem with games that don't take my hand and lead me across the street. Especially when those games are non-linear but incorporate a good story(Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic & GTA Vice City two examples of this). Even Chrono Cross is in a way non-linear as the story can branch into seperate paths at certain points.
