Why am I thinking Rudra. Level ups only serve one purpose, that person gets more MP. Randim battles are all the same attack you can't really lose while bosses are use the same stratagy of magic.
Its finding that stratagy and fine tuning it which can be sort of fun.
Rudra is linear but there are 3 quests to play and the plot interactions are nice thing to see. Well not from a dialogue perspecive. Characters are very generic and do not develop what-so-ever.
As for this magic system. You make your own spells by writing them in the game. It would be good but you are forced to find really powerful spells (by reading a guide) as the bosses are stupidly hard to counter this. Its really nice when you do figure out how combing gamephrases makes strong spells (kind of like how Kanjis in real life opperate).
Its a nice idea but it doesn't make the game worth the many 8s,9s and 10s you see at Gamefaqs.
FF:VI has sort of reached the magic delivery system stage of prcedings. Now if only I knew what it is I was supposed to be doing. And from reading a guide it appears iv'e permanently lost shadow (named Jaffar in my game), at least I have a save at the end of the first part.
Thats a real problem with RPGs are repetiveness especilly when the battles are REALLY easy or REALLY HARD! And speaking of Hard that reminds me of the small portion of eien no filena which I played.
The starting battles are not supposed to be so hard you hit deak on the second match because 4 potions were NOT enough. The only interesting thing about Eien no filena is its possibly the first SNES RPG released and some parts of its storyline are supposed to be rather amusing (the lead female character is disguised as a man and ends up marrying a woman!). I better ask my friend to finish it sometime so he write a review and possibly a guide of sorts. Don't worry, he can read Japanese.
Its funny but what consituates for a bad rpg usually overleps with what makes one decent.

I haven't played a lot of RPGs which are actually "hard." It is hard (or just annoying) if you want to finish everything, or get a perfect on each stage (SRPG, win without losing anyone on the stage).
MOST of the RPGs don't have a level cap... well, mostly capped it at 99 or 50~60, while the game can be finished at lv ~30. I don't like level-whoring in any game, and I take points off if a game requires the players to put a lot of time on leveling (as opposed to just... play).

Xenogears has a crappy story IMO Thanks for stating your opinion... I mean, don't try to validate your crappy [one that is not backed up by anything] taste in games by calling it your opinion.

Out of the poll choices I have only played Breath Of fire 4, Final Fantasy 7, Final fantasy 8, and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicals. Out of those Final Fantasy probably has to be my favorite but if I had more then I would probably go with Star Ocean or Adventure of Link.

I'd have to go with Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy 5. I liked the class system of that game, and the storyline, even though it was full of cliches, was executed finely(IMO).
The class system allowed you to create a party that played as you wanted. It's graphics are bad, but it's gameplay, story and charachters surely put FF5 above Golden Sun.

Final Fantasy for me. True, the title has a lot of annoying fanboism attached to it, espeicially FF7, but I do love the games. Between FFX, FFX-2 and FFXI, I`ve been losing a lot of faith in it lately, but when I start to, I just go back and play FF4, 5, 6, 8, and 9 and realize that whatever it`s become now, it was once awesomeness.
Other favorite that wasn`t listed would be the Seiken games. SD3 was, until I played Rekka no Ken, my favorite game ever. The gameplay is fun, and I just LOVE the characters.

Golden sun is just average, too average. While GS: the lost age was an improvement, it was only okay.
As for Bo: Bof1:sucked Bof2:Pretty good Bof3:okay for FF: FF1-3:sucked FF4:Excellent FF5:average FF6:Excellent FF7:Excellent FF8:Couldn't force myself to finish this game since the story line was freakin stupid. FF9:okay FF10:My personal favorite FF10-2:a dissapointment
My favorite RPG are Dragon Quest 6, Terranigma, Fire Emblem 4.
Most overrated RPG goes to Chrono Trigger, but an excellent game though.
Most underrated RPG is Final Fantasy 5. People who hate the game just because the story was average. #nosmileys

... I don`t know where people get that FF5`s story was average and FF8`s story was bad. I loved the stories. I loved them a heck of a lot more than FF10`s or FF7`s.
And the NES FFs were very good. They completely created the genre as we know it. Play Dragon Warrior 1 and Final Fantasy 1 one right after the other -- FF1 is a damn good game.
(And FF9 is my favorite. People are so mean to it for no reason ;_; )

Yes, I thought FF5 had a lame story. Guilty as charged. =P
Quite simply, I felt that there was no real hook. It didn't interest me or engage me right off the bat, so I was only just playing for the job system. And when I started getting tired of that, there was nothing else there to keep me going. I'm told that the story gets better further in, but if it's not going to interest me enough for me to get there...
My favorite RPG of all time is easily Fire Emblem 4. Close runners-up are Final Fantasy Tactics and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue.
Oh, and the Grandia series. I've never played the first one, but I adore Grandia II, and yes, I even like Grandia Xtreme. I'm a weirdo, I know.

Oh, right, Lunar, too! I love the Lunar games, they`re great! I also prefer the second, which I find is somewhat of a rarity ...
I`m fond of FFT, but FFTA was a MAJOR disappointment for me. The battles were annoying, the hit percentages were brutal, the laws system was DUMB, and the story was just plain hokey.

FF5 was average to me too as a FF game but I liked how the world map changes and it isn't always the same. Every Super Nintendo FF game the world map changed at some point I like that.
