Names. Let's talk names.

Well, I don't think it's a secret anymore that the one helping Eai with his project is me. So....here I am. And I shall ask you about the few problematic names.

First Rule : I'm NOT using the Treasure names, unless in specific cases. No arguing. It will get you nowhere.

SO the magic sword is "Mistelteinn".

I am NOT going to ignore the game's kana spellings THAT completely, though. So how does "Mistolteinn" or "Mistorteinn" sound to you?

Oh yeah, and....I'll probably pass this through the FESS again when the time is right, but I think I'm going to change Yuria and Yurius to Julia and Julius. It's a completely legal spelling (Julian in Romancing Saga 3 is spelled "Yurian" in katakana)....and it'll make more sense. I know we're used to Yuria, but we're also translating for people who've never seen the game, right? So what do you think? (The translator = Me is biased on this one. I work with chemicals a lot, dammit, and "Yuria" always reminds me of pee. Yuria = Urea. Eh. )

........I should list a complete list of name changes sometimes. I'm writing Fin as Finn and Ethlin as Ethlinn, which could be a problem in consideration with FE5's opening scenes. Since I translate for FE5, for one of the projects anyway (=P), so there might be a way to...um, work around it, but I won't bet on the possibility.

And Edin. I think the last half of her treasure name makes sense, so I'll keep it as Edean. Or would you prefer Eideen or something along the lines? The mythological connections in this case are somewhat jumbled, and I don't know what's supposed to be the correct spelling.

And out of stubbornness...I present to you another two names.

Aless/Ares. Yes, I know Ares's a reference, but I hate this god. If you want it in, tell me.

Delmud/Dermod. This is purely my FinLache fangirl mind telling me to ask it. Delmud's actually a more reasonable version of its kana, but if you use the other one....it's actually an Irish mythology reference. (Dermod is a jilted lover of sorts....of a woman who belong to Finn Mac Cumhail....according to my Irish folklore book. So laugh. Here's the REAL reason why Delmud never talked to Finn....mother complex! XD In another resource, he's a guy in Finn's troops. Anyway, it's a reference.)

I miss the old FE and Real Life topic. Ahhh, so many names I researched there....probably can do it again, though...I still have the old links. If I have the time.

Good. Except I like "Midayle" better then "Mideel." Is that alright?

I usually say it as "Mistortin," so with the choices given, I'd go for "Mistorteinn." But can the text box hold that many letters?

I also agree with the Yuria/Urea/Julia thing. Although "Yurious" sounds more evil then "Julius..."

Edin or Edean sound good. As does Ares. But if you don't like it, go for Aless. But people might get Aless confused with Ellis or Alice.

Hmm... I've never seen it written as Dermod, but that reference changes things. I'll come back to that.

I can do some research as well. A person in my Scholastic Bowl team knows Greek, Roman and Norse mythology like the back of his hand. And my English teacher has a few books on it.

. . . I don't see why Ethlin's name needs the extra 'n'. Unless it's for coninuity with Finn. You could even call Cuan "Kyuwann." I've seen that spelling somewhere.

And what about Baldo's sword? It's supposed to be Tyr's Finger, but I don't think that'll fit.

Ethlinn is a mythological reference, NoBaka. Hence the extra n.

'Treasure': In general, I prefer the OldPatch names to the Treasure names, with the exceptions of
Ira
Skasaher
Johalva

'J': Julia and Julius are the 'proper' translations of the names, anyway (according the JQT in any case). I don't really care which you use, though... Julia sounds better than Yuria, but I'm not so sure about Yurius/Julius. Hmm.


'Mist': I didn't know they had English for the holy weapons in the Treasure. In any case, I generally use Mistoltin for the Demon Sword, but it's one of the ones like Coupl where just about everyone uses a different spelling/pronunciation. Just go with what you prefer, is my advice.

'nn', 'Edin', 'Ares': Well, I don't really have an opinion on these :/

'Delmud': But if you call him Dermod, we won't be able to refer to him as 'mud...
Dermod just... doesn't sound right, in my opinion. But I'm not vehemently opposed to it, or anything.

'Tyrfing' NoBaka: No, Tyrfing is a valid sword name. It's just based on Tyr's Finger, it's not supposed to be Tyr's Finger.

i like edin ares but i don't care if that changed to aless delmund i kinda prefer julia don't really care but i prefer Yurius for the prince and what Skasaher new name gonna be?

Well, if she uses the OldPatch name it'll be Sukasa, Treasure it'll be Skasaher, or she could use straight kana in which case it'd be Sukasaha, or she could go off on a tangent and call him something like Bob.

Skasaher = I'm going to stick with it. I can' stand Sukasha.

I'm not going with old patch names, either. I'm going with whatever makes sense. (Oh yes. And a few characters' speaking pattern will be changed. I know Tiltyu is spunky, but a daughter of a great lord, talking like Sylvia? Naaah.)

Mistorteinn. OK. I like that better, too. The text box in the menu won't fit. But it never did in the first place. =P

Dermod is...well, I'll check the exact reference again once I get back from work.

I don't think people will confuse between Aless and Celice or Ellis. The sound is quite different. And you know, I've seen it romanized as Alex. Not that I mean to do so, of course. (Ares is just an idiotic, stuck up, whiny god. That's why I hate him) Although, I'd change it back if enough people ask for it.

Ira will be Ayra. I'm sorry. That's just how it's mostly spelled these days.

Midayle? Well...I've got half a mind to change his name to Midir...to fit with his reference, but of course, like Edin, his reference is rather conflicting. Maybe it's Midayle. I'd appreciate more input on this.

Is there something special about Johalva that I should know? I'm willing to consider anything.

I just prefer Johalva because IMO Johalvier sounds... bad... in any case, Johalva is closer to Yoharuva :/

If you're gonna translate this to for people new to FE4, then change Yuria to Julia and keep Yurious. Makes it less obvious that Yuria and Yurious are related.

The only thing I can complain about are Ethlinn and Finn. I think 2 n looks weird but that's really it. I would get a heart attack if you change Yurius to Julius etc. Well maybe Dermod... I like Delmud better. Again I really wouldn't have a heart atack or anything.

The double n's are because it's a reference to Irish folklore. And well.........if you want Julia instead of Yuria, you'll get Julius. It'd one way or the other.

One more score for Delmud. ^^
